Minecraft is a sandbox video game formerly created by Swedish game designer Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and posted by Mojang. The creative and building areas of Minecraft permit players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, tool gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay settings are available, including survival function where the player must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to make with and the capability to fly, an excursion function where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can take flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or damage any. The Computer version of the overall game is noted for its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and investments for the overall game.Minecraft received reward from critics after release, and won numerous awards and accolades. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game to date and the next best-selling video game ever, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft released a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the participant to perform, allowing players a great amount of flexibility in choosing how to experiment with the gameHowever, there is an success system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to experience in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and inserting blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only just be put at resolved locations on the grid. Players can gather these materials blocks and place them in other places, thus enabling various constructions. In the beginning of the game, the ball player is put on the top of a procedurally generated and almost infinite game world. The global world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system practices a full day and night pattern, with one full pattern long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the game, players face various non-player character types known as mobs, including animals, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, like the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
