Minecraft is a sandbox gaming actually created by Swedish game custom made Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and shared by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, reference gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival function where the player must acquire resources to develop the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to generate with and the ability to fly, an excitement mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator method where players can take flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or destroy any. The Computer version of the game is noted for its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and resources for the overall game.Minecraft received praise from critics upon release, and gained numerous accolades and awards. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players every month, making it the best-selling PC game up to now and the next best-selling video game ever, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft announced a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed two months later.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the gamer to accomplish, allowing players a great amount of freedom in choosing how to play the gameHowever, there can be an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to play in third person function. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and putting blocks. The game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move openly around the world, objects can only just be positioned at fixed locations on the grid. Players can accumulate these materials blocks and place them elsewhere, thus enabling various constructions. In the beginning of the game, the ball player is placed on the top of a procedurally produced and practically infinite game world. The world is divided into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system comes after a night and day circuit, with one full cycle long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players face various non-player characters known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the day time. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been mentioned by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the player; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
