As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each month, making it the best-selling PC game as of yet and the next best-selling video game of most right time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft declared a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed 8 weeks later.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the gamer to perform, allowing players a great amount of independence in choosing how that can be played the gameHowever, there can be an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice that can be played in third person function. The core gameplay revolves around putting and breaking blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move freely across the world, objects can only just be positioned at permanent locations on the grid. Players can gather these materials place and blocks them anywhere else, enabling various constructions thus.In the beginning of the game, the player is put on the surface of a procedurally made and practically infinite game world. The global world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system practices a night and day circuit, with one full cycle prolonged 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the overall game, players encounter various non-player people known as mobs, including pets or animals, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been mentioned by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the player; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
