Minecraft is a sandbox gaming at first created by Swedish game creator Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and shared by Mojang. The creative and building areas of Minecraft allow players to develop constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, source of information gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival function where the player must acquire resources to develop the world and keep maintaining health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to generate with and the ability to fly, an experience setting where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator function where players can fly around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or destroy any. The Computer version of the overall game is noted for its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and belongings for the overall game.Minecraft received compliment from critics after release, and won numerous honours and accolades. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game as of yet and the second best-selling video game of all right time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft announced a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed 8 weeks later.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the player to perform, allowing players a great amount of independence in choosing how to try out the gameHowever, there is an accomplishment system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option that can be played in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around inserting and breaking blocks. The game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move widely across the world, objects can only be put at predetermined locations on the grid. Players can gather these materials blocks and place them in other places, enabling various constructions thus.In the beginning of the game, the player is placed on the top of a procedurally produced and virtually infinite game world. The earth is divided into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system practices a day and night circuit, with one full cycle long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players come across various non-player personas known as mobs, including pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been observed by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the gamer; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
