Minecraft is a sandbox video game at first created by Swedish game artist Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and publicized by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft permit players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Alternative activities in the overall game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival function where the player must acquire resources to develop the world and maintain health, a creative method where players have unlimited resources to develop with and the capability to fly, an excursion method where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator mode where players can take flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or destroy any. The PC version of the game is noted for its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and property for the overall game.Minecraft received compliment from critics after release, and earned numerous accolades and accolades. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each full month, making it the best-selling PC game to date and the second best-selling gaming of most right time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft announced a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed 8 weeks later.

Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to learn in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and placing blocks. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been mentioned by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
