Minecraft is a sandbox gaming formerly created by Swedish game creator Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and published by Mojang later. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Other activities in the game include exploration, reference gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to build the global world and maintain health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to build with and the capability to fly, an adventure mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can take a flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or demolish any. The Personal computer version of the game is noted because of its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and assets for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics after release, and acquired numerous accolades and honours. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game at this point and the second best-selling gaming of most right time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft announced a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to learn in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and placing blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move openly across the world, objects can only just be located at permanent locations on the grid. Players can collect these materials place and blocks them in other places, enabling various constructions thus.At the start of the game, the ball player is placed on the top of any procedurally generated and virtually infinite game world. The global world is divided into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system follows a day and night pattern, with one full routine long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players come across various non-player characters known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
