Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the gamer to accomplish, allowing players a great amount of flexibility in choosing how to experiment with the gameHowever, there is an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice that can be played in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around placing and breaking blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move around the world freely, objects can only just be placed at permanent locations on the grid. Players can collect these materials place and blocks them anywhere else, thus allowing for various constructions. In the beginning of the game, the participant is located on the top of a procedurally generated and nearly infinite game world. The global world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system comes after a night and day cycle, with one full circuit prolonged 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players encounter various non-player character types known as mobs, including pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the day time. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the participant; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
