Minecraft is a sandbox video game originally created by Swedish game artist Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and posted by Mojang later. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft permit players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Other activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to generate the world and maintain health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to create with and the capability to fly, an experience function where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can travel around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or demolish any. The Laptop or computer version of the game is noted because of its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and assets for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics upon release, and triumphed in numerous prizes and accolades. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game at this point and the next best-selling gaming of most right time, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft released a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed two months later.

The in-game time system comes after a night and day routine, with one full pattern enduring 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the game, players face various non-player people known as mobs, including pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been noted by reviewers, like the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the gamer; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
