Minecraft is a sandbox gaming originally created by Swedish game creator Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and shared by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to construct constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Alternative activities in the overall game include exploration, source gathering, crafting, and battle. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to create the global world and maintain health, a creative setting where players have unlimited resources to make with and the ability to fly, an adventure method where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator function where players can take a flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or ruin any. The Computer version of the game is noted for its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and possessions for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics upon release, and received numerous honours and accolades. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each full month, making it the best-selling PC game currently and the next best-selling gaming of all time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft released a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed two months.

Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to try out in third person method. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and inserting blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only be placed at permanent locations on the grid. Players can collect these materials blocks and place them in other places, thus enabling various constructions. In the very beginning of the game, the gamer is located on the surface of a procedurally produced and nearly infinite game world. The world is split into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system practices a day and night pattern, with one full cycle sustained 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the game, players face various non-player characters known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the day time. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the gamer; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
