Minecraft is a sandbox video game formerly created by Swedish game custom Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and posted by Mojang later. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft permit players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Alternative activities in the overall game include exploration, source gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival setting where the player must acquire resources to make the world and maintain health, a creative setting where players have unlimited resources to develop with and the ability to fly, an experience setting where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can take a flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or demolish any. The PC version of the overall game is noted for its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and belongings for the overall game.Minecraft received compliment from critics upon release, and won numerous accolades and honors. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each month, rendering it the best-selling PC game up to now and the second best-selling video game ever, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft announced a offer to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed 8 weeks later.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the participant to accomplish, allowing players a great amount of flexibility in choosing how to learn the gameHowever, there is an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to experiment with in third person setting. The core gameplay revolves around inserting and breaking blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move around the world freely, objects can only be placed at fixed locations on the grid. Players can gather these materials blocks and place them somewhere else, thus enabling various constructions. In the very beginning of the game, the player is placed on the surface of the procedurally generated and almost infinite game world. The global world is split into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system employs a night and day cycle, with one full pattern sustained 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players come across various non-player character types known as mobs, including animals, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the day time. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been mentioned by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
