Minecraft is a sandbox gaming originally created by Swedish game creator Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and published by Mojang later. The creative and building areas of Minecraft allow players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Other activities in the overall game include exploration, learning resource gathering, crafting, and battle. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to construct the global world and maintain health, a creative method where players have unlimited resources to build with and the ability to fly, an excitement mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator method where players can soar around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or kill any. The Laptop or computer version of the overall game is noted for its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and investments for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics upon release, and gained numerous accolades and honours. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each month, rendering it the best-selling PC game at this point and the next best-selling video game ever, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft announced a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed two months later.

Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to play in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and positioning blocks. The game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only just be put at fixed locations on the grid. Players can gather these material place and blocks them in other places, enabling various constructions thus.In the beginning of the game, the participant is put on the surface of the procedurally generated and virtually infinite game world. The planet is divided into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system employs a day and night cycle, with one full routine enduring 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the game, players face various non-player character types known as mobs, including animals, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the day time. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been noted by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
