Minecraft is a sandbox gaming at first created by Swedish game custom made Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and publicized by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft permit players to construct constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Other activities in the overall game include exploration, learning resource gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival method where the player must acquire resources to generate the world and maintain health, a creative method where players have unlimited resources to make with and the ability to fly, an adventure method where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator mode where players can travel around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or destroy any. The Personal computer version of the game is noted because of its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and resources for the overall game.Minecraft received reward from critics after release, and gained numerous accolades and accolades. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each month, making it the best-selling PC game thus far and the second best-selling gaming ever, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft declared a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to experience in third person function. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and positioning blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only just be positioned at preset locations on the grid.
