Minecraft is a sandbox video game at first created by Swedish game creator Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and released by Mojang later. The creative and building areas of Minecraft enable players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Other activities in the overall game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to make the global world and maintain health, a creative setting where players have unlimited resources to construct with and the ability to fly, an experience function where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator mode where players can take flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or kill any. The Laptop or computer version of the game is noted for its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and resources for the game.Minecraft received compliment from critics after release, and acquired numerous accolades and awards. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players every month, making it the best-selling PC game thus far and the next best-selling gaming of all time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft released a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed 8 weeks later.

Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to play in third person method. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and inserting blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move freely around the world, objects can only be placed at predetermined locations on the grid. Players can collect these materials place and blocks them anywhere else, thus enabling various constructions. At the start of the game, the ball player is placed on the top of your procedurally produced and nearly infinite game world. The planet is divided into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system uses a full day and night routine, with one full pattern long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Throughout the course of the overall game, players encounter various non-player individuals known as mobs, including pets or animals, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the day time. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, like the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
