Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to play in third person method. The core gameplay revolves around positioning and breaking blocks. The overall game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only be positioned at predetermined locations on the grid. Players can gather these material blocks and place them somewhere else, thus enabling various constructions. In the beginning of the game, the player is located on the surface of a procedurally produced and almost infinite game world. The global world is divided into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system follows a full day and night routine, with one full cycle long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the overall game, players encounter various non-player character types known as mobs, including pets or animals, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the daytime. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been known by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
