Minecraft is a sandbox gaming at first created by Swedish game developer Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and shared by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Alternative activities in the overall game include exploration, source gathering, crafting, and battle. Multiple gameplay settings are available, including survival method where the player must acquire resources to create the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to construct with and the capability to fly, an trip method where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator function where players can journey around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or kill any. The Computer version of the overall game is noted for its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and property for the game.Minecraft received reward from critics after release, and received numerous accolades and honours. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game up to now and the second best-selling video game of most right time, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft released a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed two months later.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the player to accomplish, allowing players plenty of independence in choosing how to experience the gameHowever, there can be an accomplishment system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to try out in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and positioning blocks. The overall game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move easily across the world, objects can only just be located at preset locations on the grid. Players can get these material place and blocks them somewhere else, thus allowing for various constructions. At the start of the game, the ball player is put on the top of the procedurally produced and nearly infinite game world. The global world is split into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system practices a complete night and day circuit, with one full circuit prolonged 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players face various non-player characters known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the day time. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been known by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the participant; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
